Hasegawa Happy Hour Mail

constellation cardA couple of weeks ago, I got this beautiful letter from Xenia of Saturday Morning Vintage. Even if it had just been a quick note, I would have been over the moon. What a creative envelope!

vintage bar tenderBut when I opened the envelope, a few pieces fell out of the card. You can see them above. They are vintage liquor labels and slips from a bartender’s order pad. Aren’t they amazing? In her note, Xenia mentioned seeing my Hasegawa Happy Hour posts and pictures on Instagram, so she thought I might enjoy these vintage bits. They made me super happy and inspired me to get started on a mini-book of our happy hour adventures for 2014. I’m picturing a tiny something with paper bits, photographs and some recipes (both cocktails and snacks). Hmmm…maybe a complete one for us and a well-edited one can be made into a zine…

Scenes From Hasegawa Happy Hours-February Edition

north shore citrus vodkaI feel like I slacked off a little bit on Hasegawa Happy Hours in February and I need to raise the bar back up to January standards. The big excuse: Naoto was dry for the month of February, so I didn’t feel a lot of motivation. But Hasegawa Happy Hours are supposed to be more about companionship and trying new homemade snacks and appetizers (along with the cocktails!), soI guess there is no excuse. 

The first week, Naoto was starting to get sick, so I made him lemon tea and I made myself a Winter Solstice. (I’m sharing the recipe below because the North Shore Distillery changes up their cocktails with the seasons and I’m afraid it won’t be around if you are interested in making it. All credit goes to North Shore for this one!)

Winter Solstice 

1 1/2 oz Sol Chamomile Citrus Vodka

1/2 oz Spiced Honey Syrup*

6 oz lemon tea (I used a bit more tea…for a lightweight cocktail)

Add Sol and honey syrup to a mug, top with hot tea. Stir, and garnish with a slice of fresh lemon. (I used an orange because that’s all we had.)

*Spiced Honey Syrup (also from North Shore Distillery)

1 cup honey

1/2 cup water

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon cardamom

1/4 teaspoon ginger

dash of allspice

Heat all of the ingredients in a saucepan, stirring often. Once honey is dissolved, remove from heat. Allow to cool completely before using. Store remaining syrup in a jar in the refrigerator.

The Winter Solstice was warm and cozy…the spices in the honey syrup were the the perfect complement to the citrus vodka. In a winter that seems to be never-ending, it’s nice to have a hot cocktail to comfort the snow away.cocktail from annabellesThe next week, I was in San Francisco eating with friends at Annabelle’s. I had a Brooklyn Cocktail. colony cocktail and oolong teaThe next week, I was experimenting with the Colony (recipe coming this week!) and Naoto was happily drinking oolong tea. amelia's bloody double rye manhattanAnd, for the final February HHH, I made Naoto take me to Amelia’s (one of our favorite restaurants in Forest Park) for dinner and drinks because I knew it was the last time I could count on him to be the designated driver. Amelia’s makes a really tasty Bloody Double Rye Manhattan that uses Leopold’s Michigan Tart Cherry Liqueurit’s my favorite. They also make amazing roast chickenit’s a win win. 

So, I have two Hasegawa Happy Hours to plan before we leave for Japan. And while we are in Japan, I think every night will be Hasegawa Happy Hour…hopefully I will have some good cocktails and snacks to share next month!

San Francisco Favorites

San Francisco paper bitsI have quite a stash of paper bits that I picked up along the way in San Francisco. I am hoping to get them all stashed into a mini book with some pictures from the trip soon. (Of course, the fact that I still haven’t finished my book of our trip to Japan hangs over my head as I type this.) Hopefully, I’ll be back before I leave for Japan with a completed mini book…

As a final post about San Francisco and Ex Postal Facto, I thought I’d share a few favorites from my trip. juice at the hotel abri nightclubI stayed at the Hotel Abri near Union Square. Naoto and I chose it blindly because it was super close to the BART and within a short walking distance of two of the three Ex Postal Facto event locations. We got a really good rate, which made me nervous…inexpensive hotels in expensive cities can be scary places. Thankfully, the Abri was fantastic…the staff were all kind and helpful, the room was clean and modern (there was a super-large TV on the wall, perfect for middle-of-the-night viewings of the Olympics!) and they served little juice shots in the lobby every afternoon. When I checked in, they offered me the choice between an interior room or an exterior room. Of course, I wanted the street-side! (I’m no stranger to noise!) It turns out, the nightclub across from the hotel was JUST below my window (pictured above, velvet ropes and all). On Friday night when I got home, I had to laugh at all of the commotion, but it didn’t really bother me…the club music became white noise and I was up watching the Olympics anyway.

chocolates from naotoOn Friday, I came back to the hotel to find a surprise from Naoto. When I used to travel for work, he would send me something on every trip–a fruit basket, chocolate covered strawberries, a fruit bouquet, a cheese plate… It was fun to get a treat again. This time it was Ghiradelli chocolate-themed and it made me smile. streetcarsRiding iconic streetcars was the best way to travel! (Read more about car No. 1073 here.) tradition barWe had drinks at Tradition on Saturday night. They have a large book of handcrafted cocktails organized by style/era (Speakeasy, Dive-Bar, Tiki, New Orleans, pub…) and you can sit and enjoy those drinks in “snugs” to match. I had an Old Fashioned and a Colony and maybe it was just the company I was with, but man, those cocktails were tasty and I really liked this place. (We have a lot of bars in our neighborhood here in Forest Park, but sadly none of them are good craft cocktail bars…sigh.)craftsman and wolvesOn Sunday, Bob, Ana and I had breakfast at Craftsman and Wolves. Pictured above is The Rebel Within, a tasty asiago, sausage and onion muffin with a soft boiled egg baked inside (!!!), chocolate sourdough bread and the best cup of coffee I had all weekend. (I brought some beans home for Naoto…coffee makes the best souvenir.) card catalogI played around with a real life card catalog at the San Francisco Public Library while Ana perused their calligraphy collectionjapan townJapan Town was loads of fun…I think I would have appreciated it more if my trip to Japan weren’t so close. As a matter of fact, I’m super jealous that San Franciscans have such a huge portal to Japan!melissa and a jumbo hot chocolateMy trip ended (well, before that other ending) at La Boulange where I met up with a group of friends from letter writing and xPF. I didn’t eat or drink anything here, but I did covet the giant bowl of hot chocolate that everyone seemed to be enjoying! (Pictured above is Melissa of Craftgasm.)

All of my food and drink stories made Naoto wish he had joined me. I think if Ex Postal Facto become a recurring thing, he won’t be staying home for the next trip!

Scenes from Hasegawa Happy Hours-January Edition

margaritas and chipsHasegawa Happy Hour has been in full swing around here. Every week (usually on Thursday nights), I’ve been trying a little snack recipe and mixing up a cocktail for Naoto and me (and usually friends, too). I am loving this new tradition because it’s pushed me out of my comfort zone and into making some fun things, like bread and biscuits.

For the first HHH, I whipped up classic margaritas and carefully opened some Whole Foods chips and salsa. We made Martha Stewart tacos, too. Simple and perfect for the two of us. naoto and his cardiganThe next week, Karen joined us for Last Words and homemade Avanti’s gondolas. This Hasegawa Happy Hour has set the standard for all others…
limoncello martinis
tomato cobblerNaoto received homemade limoncello for his birthday, so I decided to use it for martinis for our next Happy Hour. Our neighbor friends joined us for drinks and my first attempt at making biscuits. I found Joy the Baker’s Tomato Cobbler with Blue Cheese Biscuits and decided to give it a try. There were some things about the recipe I loved (the caramelized onions and the blue cheese biscuits) and some things that I would change on my next attempt (blazing hot whole cherry tomatoes exploding in my mouth were not fun). duck fatAnd finally, last Thursday…I taught a workshop that evening and didn’t plan ahead for cocktails. And since Naoto and Brett did not carry the Hasegawa Happy Hour torch, we went out to a neighborhood bar for drinks and dinner…well worth it!

We already have fun plans tonight for HHH, and next week I’ll be in San Francisco, so February is shaping up to be another good cocktail month. Although, Naoto gave up drinking in February, so I’ll have to come up with a few fun mocktails for him!

My plan is to compile our pictures and maybe even some favorite recipes into a little mini-book at the end of the year. I love a good paper project, you know…

Cocktail Perfected: Lychee Valentine

Lychee liqueur and proseccoWhen we decided to host Peggy and Ken for our first dinner party, I went to work thinking up a fun cocktail to serve. I wanted to make something with the lychee liqueur but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to serve the CAP Cocktail again. So I decided it might be fun to try lychee and cava. Peggy loved it, and so did I. Actually, there’s a plan to whip some up again on Friday night..anyone game?

I named the cocktail the Lychee Valentine because lychees are supposedly one of the world’s most romantic fruits. Apparently they were used by an emperor in ancient China to woo his concubine…if that doesn’t scream romance, what does?

lychee cava cocktailThe best part of the cocktail is that when you put the lychee fruit at the bottom of the glass, it collects the cava bubbles a bit and they sort of explode out of it. Super festive…

Lychee Valentine

1-2 Tablespoons Lychee Liqueur (Soho is our favorite.)

Cava (We love Albero Cava from Trader Joe’s for sparkling cocktails, but you can use any sparkling wine you like.)

canned lychee fruit (found at Asian grocery stores, like Mitsuwa in Chicago)

In a champagne flute, drop in one lychee fruit. Add 1-2 tablespoons lychee liqueur (depending on how sweet you like your cocktail). Fill the rest of the glass with cava.

Enjoy on a cold, snowy night with friends or a romantic evening with your Valentine.

Dinner Party 1 & a Sweet Hostess Gift

dinner party one, tonkatsuLast Saturday, we hosted the first dinner party of the year. I invited my book club friend Peggy and her husband over for Naoto’s tonkatsu. It was a fun night, filled with tasty cocktails (which I will be sharing next week), delicious food and of course good company. The dinner party made me wonder why we don’t entertain more often…I’m thinking I might need to increase my dinner party goal for the year–three seems so few now. This time we kept things simple, because last week got a little crazy for us. Hopefully over the course of the year, we can fancy the dinners and the tables up a bit…you know, stretch the goal.

Much to my surprise, Peggy brought me a hostess gift! Of course, hostess gifts are unnecessary but I was completely delighted with Peggy’s thoughtfulness. She found this vintage martini pitcher and vintage relish dish–be still my heart!vintage martini pitcherThe martini pitcher is heavy and has its own glass stirrer with a frosted ball on top. It has a lip that holds the ice in during pouring, too…things were so practical back in the day! Tonight, I’m going to whip up some martinis for Hasegawa Happy Hour and use it for the first time. vintage relish dishThe divided relish dish is so sweet. There are pictures of celery (the large section), olives and pickles (the two smaller sections) etched into the glass. I don’t have any pretty relish dishes, so I know this is going to get a lot of use. Whether it’s just Hasegawa Happy Hour for two or a larger gathering, pickles and olives and yes, even celery are going to be making more classy appearances around here.

Cocktail Perfected: The Correct Cocktail

the correct cocktailI had never heard of the Correct Cocktail until Ana sent me a hand-typed recipe and a picture of one in my Christmas card. It has been so cold here so I figured it would be a perfect time to cozy up with a gingery cocktail. I have to say, as a fairly new convert to ginger (this cocktail was the turning point for me), the Correct Cocktail might be a new winter favorite.

The Correct Cocktail

1.5 oz gin

0.5 oz ginger liqueur (Ana recommended Stirrings…it’s delicious)

0.5 oz triple sec

0.5 oz freshly squeezed lemon juice

2 dashes orange bitters

Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Strain into cocktail glass and garnish with a lemon twist. Enjoy on a cold, snowy night while watching Metallica play the Grammys.

Japan Does It Better 6: Japanese Airlines

All Nippon Air cocktailLet’s talk about flying to Japan.

The first time I flew to Japan, in 2008 for work, I flew American Airlines. It was fine. Economy class is uncomfortable on any flight, and it really wears on you after thirteen hours, but really, who can afford first class?

When Naoto and I flew to Japan in 2011, we flew Japan Airlines. Even though we still flew economy, it felt a little bit luxurious because the customer service was so good and because we each had our own little TVs for movie viewing. (I realize that personal screens are available on pretty much any flight theses days, but in 2011 it felt like a rare treat.)

On Japan Air, they serve a special drink, Sky Time. Sky Time is yuzu juice. Yuzu is a Japanese citrus fruit that looks kind of like a tiny grapefruit and it tastes citrus-y…maybe a cross between a lemon and a grapefruit with a little bit of orange? It’s hard to say exactly. But Sky Time is delicious. You can drink it as is or mix it with vodka. Yum. Yuzu juice can often be found at the Japanese grocery store, too, in case you want to try it without suffering through the cost and the backaches of a thirteen hour flight.

At the airport while checking in for our flight home, we were magically whisked out of line and over to a kiosk and upgraded to business class. Our seats were roomy, we were offered slippers and eye masks and treated like royalty. I credit Naoto’s good karma for the luck of the business class draw…(he has amazing parking karma, too!)

In September, we flew All Nippon Air. It was comparable to Japan Air in customer service. We didn’t have any swanky upgrade luck, but they did kindly move me to an aisle seat. And, on the flight home when the flight attendant learned that my screen didn’t work, she apologized no less than four dozen times, offered me every magazine on the plane and offered to move me to a seat with a working screen another dozen times. It felt really weird…especially since we never complained about it and then explained that I could just hijack Naoto’s screen because he would sleep anyway. Yet the apologies continued…awkwardly.

Oh, and speaking of apologies…we got a little bit off-schedule upon departure at O’Hare and though our pilot tried to make up the time in the air, we were still five minutes late upon our arrive in Japan. The pilot apologized profusely…for five minutes…it’s nice to know that some airlines value my time.

I was excited to learn that ANA also has their own signature drink, the Aromatic Kabosu. Kabosu is another citrus (it looks more like a lime but is kind of similar in taste to yuzu) and it is delicious with gin. My cocktail is pictured above with my mid-flight rice cracker snack…the mid-flight snacks are my favorites.

Kind flight attendants, respect of schedules and signature drinks…more reasons Japan Does It Better in flying!

It’s 2014

Our New Years Eve was just about perfect–Karen, Naoto, me…Manhattans and steaks at Golden Steer, wine and sweets at home, and an Adami Prosecco toast at midnight…snow by Golden Steer

It snowed in Chicago, making for the perfect wintry backdrop to the festivities. In fact, it’s pretty much been snowing since New Year’s Eve, making for a quiet start to 2014. presley watches law & orderAll we did on January 1st was watch Law & Order…it’s kind of a tradition on New Year’s Day to get sucked into TV marathons and Law & Order is our favorite. I should be embarrassed to admit that I watched from 9AM (January 1) until 2AM (January 2), but I also hung up my new calendar and wrote out a few New Year cards, so we’ll call that a productive first day of 2014.

Today, I’m putting Christmas away and trying to get organized for real…a constant battle around here.

A Fine Christmas Indeed…

2013 Christmas giftsIt feels like Christmas was weeks ago…

Naoto and I enjoyed our usual Christmas tradition of sleeping in, opening gifts, going to Mitsuwa and coming home for cocktails and Christmas dinner. The day felt long, in the best possible way. Naoto and SPAMNaoto had only practical (ahem…boring) things on his Christmas list, so I had to add in a little SPAM surprise. I think he liked it. (Also, I’m not sure why I picked an Instagram filter that made Naoto look like he hasn’t seen the sun in years…)

And, as always, Naoto chose the most perfect gifts for me (pictured at the top): Redemption High Rye, Burt’s Bees chapstick, a Vintage Email stamp from Wit & Whistle, a Kaweco Sport fountain pen and ink, a Paper Parcel Subscription from Saturday Morning Vintage and tickets to a Blackhawks game on January 5th!!
