Plot #6: Still Planting

Naoto and I spent some time in the garden on Memorial Day. It rained a lot in the morning but by afternoon it was pretty good gardening weather. I love working in the dirt after it rains. Weeds come out like buttah, transplants nestle easily into the moist soil, and best of all, I don’t have to drag the hose out.   I gave up on both of my tomatoes that I’d started from seed and attempted to transplant. (I have a couple more seedlings on the balcony…we’ll see if they ever get big enough to move over.) Since I “only” had three tomato plants, I impulsively bought a Sweet 100 Cherry Tomato plant over the weekend. I’m excited to see the vines dripping with tiny tomatoes. (Hopefully.)

I also planted a thyme plant and some basil and dill seeds. And that’s all for now. I still have four squares that are empty! I wanted to buy some golden beets, but I didn’t see and seeds at the garden shop this weekend. Hopefully I’ll have some time to make use of those four feet before the tomatoes take over!

A huge thanks to Laura for watering our plot while we are gone!

Japanese Class, Take Two

japanese language workbooksI signed up for another session of Japanese classes and they begin tonight! Naoto even called to make sure the class wasn’t going to get cancelled and he got the book list in advance, so I am extra prepared with my shiny new workbooks. I think poor Naoto thinks I’m going to be some Japanese speaking whiz after classes, but I have very little hope for myself…I just want to be able to order coffee and talk about craft supplies. Anything else is just bonus.

Happy Birthday, Naoto!

Handmade “Aerograms”

creative stationery, aerogramI’ve had these stamp information sheets since this LWA RSVP series in 2012. I found them in my vast paper stash while I was geting my desk organized (which is still an ongoing project–so many drawers, so many decisions.) The stamp sheets have pictures and educational bits on one side and are blank on the other, so I figured I could write letters and fold them into makeshift aerograms. The paper is thick and sturdy, perfect for handwriting or typewriters and I knew if I used some washi tape to seal it all up, that the recipients could (hopefully) open their letters easily without cutting into them. creative stationeryI hand wrote a letter to April on the “Postage Stamps of New Zealand” sheet. Then I folded the sheet into thirds, paying attention to how the back would look. I wanted the title part (seen at the top photo) to be the feature.creative stationery, aerogramI folded some red paper tape (from Target) over the two ends. creative stationery, aerogramThen I used thick washi tape (from Japan) to seal the top. creative stationery, aerogramI wrapped the thick washi tape around the front of the envelope and stamped the ends with an “OPEN HERE” stamp (from a set of postal-themed stamps that I bought it Japan). Hopefully, the little directions will prevent the sendees from tearing open the aerogram like an envelope. creative stationery, aerogram I had so much fun making these and spending out some of my paper hoard. I’m thrilled that I found my letter writing mojo again!

National Donut Day

Happy National Donut Day!
I hope you’ll forgive me for skipping out on sharing a garden update as promised this week. The weather has been so beautiful that I can’t tear myself away from the balcony. But I think I finally have everything planted and situated out there and I will have pictures of both the balcony garden and of plot #6 to share next week.
Now, if you need me, I’ll be out on the balcony writing letters.
P.S. The donut pictured above is from Stan’s Donuts. I had one for the first time last month and I’m hooked!

Screen-Free Afternoons

cat napsSo far this year, the most difficult “intention” for me has been Screen-Free Afternoons. And truthfully, it’s probably the most important intention. Stepping away from technology and focusing on making things and finishing things and doing things leads to all of my other intentions.

Because of Screen-Free Afternoons, I’m turning off the TV a little bit earlier in the day or not turning it on at all. The TODAY show is a bad addiction. I feel much better when I listen to NPR and work at my desk in the mornings, but somehow the TODAY show seems to win too often. And when it’s on, I’m less productive not just in the mornings, but for the whole day. I found kind of a nice groove by the end of January and into February, but after Ex Postal Facto, I kind of lost steam. In March, I’ve refocused and tried harder. Usually around one o’clock, I turn off the TV (if it’s still on) and step away from the computer, the iPad and the iPhone for two hours. I usually put a podcast or music on and get to work. On the days that feel most successful, I have “scheduled” a project to work on. So far, I’ve finished a few back-burner craft projects, written a few letters, cleaned a couple of closets and read. Reading is a slippery slope though…it often leads to napping, especially after lunch!

I’m already starting my post-vacation list of Screen-Free Afternoons. I need to focus on getting some housework done this spring so I can focus on getting outside on the balcony and in the garden plot when it warms up.

How are your goals for 2014 coming along? I plan to do a complete “first quarter” update of mine in April.

Shark Week

20130810-181028.jpg

Do you celebrate Shark Week? We never really did until we met our neighbor friends. Tonight they are hosting a Shark Week party, complete with shark-themed cocktails, movies, decorations, dog and (thanks to me and Pinterest) a Shark-themed cake. I will share details next week, but for now, I’ll just share the shark sign that I created for the party. It is inspired by this awesome wood version. I made it a few years ago (also for a Shark Week party) and I kept my hand drawn templates online…so easy to recreate it! This year, I added glitter with my favorite glue pen…I hope the neighbors don’t mind a little shark sparkle.

Cocktail Perfected: Vesper (-ish) Martini

DSC_0013

The Vesper is another classic cocktail that’s been on my list for some time. Naoto brought home some Lillet on one of his many trips to the liquor store during his surgery recovery (he was drinking vicariously through me) and it’s been sitting on the bar cart just waiting to be opened.

So, when I decided to have our neighbor friends over to watch game six of the Stanley Cup Finals, I decided it was time to try the Vesper.

The original vesper was invented by James Bond in Casino Royale in 1953. It contained gin, Lillet and vodka. But I just couldn’t do it. I couldn’t “water” down my good gin with vodka. So I left it out. I found this suggested variation here and I thought it worked nicely. I tried it with two different gins–North Shore No. 6 and Leopold’s–and for this, we (the neighbor friends & I) enjoyed Leopold’s more.

Vesper(-ish) Martini

2 oz dry gin

3/4 oz Lillet Blanc

Add to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake (or stir) until thoroughly chilled. Pour into a cocktail glass and garnish with a lemon peel. Enjoy while your team wins the Stanley Cup.

It’s Been Quiet Around Here…

photo(71)

…because I’m in the middle of the most depressing cleaning project ever. Depressing only because I’ve put it off for so long.

We’ve lived here for two and a half years, but in some ways, I feel like we’ve never settled in. Certain things have never had a “place” and the guest room has always been an easy home for clutter. So this week I’ve been making a “place” for the things I want to keep and bagging up the things that I don’t. On Wednesday I finished up in our bedroom and our closets. This makes me extremely happy because repainting our bedroom and finishing our bathroom (FYI: the big work is done and we’re using it, but we still have to hang our mirror, the hooks and some art) are the last two big things we have to do before I will feel completely settled here. (Full disclosure: Our bedroom is the first room I painted when we bought our apartment. I’ve hated the color since the first roll. Lesson: Life’s too short to live with a bad paint choice.) Now that the bedroom and the closets are decluttered, we can get in there and paint. (And when I say we, I mean me.)

Yesterday I started tearing apart the guest room…it’s a big job in there. It was already a disaster and then, while I was cleaning our bedroom, I used the guest bed as a place to hold the things I couldn’t decide about. Now it’s time to pay the piper and find that stuff a home, or send it out. The picture above is of my stationery drawer–which has gotten a little bit out of hand. (Just a little.) I’ve sifted through it and everything fits into a basket now, which will be much easier to transport into the living room for letter writing. Tonight, I’m tackling the craft stuff, getting rid of dead and uninspiring materials and organizing the stuff that’s left. I’m trying to consolidate all of the like items and find them a home once and for all.

As depressing as the Great Clean Out has been, it’s also like a mini surprise party! I’ve unearthed some amazing things that I’d forgotten about like letters from old college friends and my old work notebook, filled with haikus that I’d written during meetings. (I was a diligent employee.) I’m glad I’m taking the time to find a good home for these little treasures of my past. And, I’m glad that I’ll soon be able to see all the craft stuff so I can use it up and spend it out.

So, that’s what’s been keeping me away from doing anything fun. Hopefully I’ll be back next week with a finished project and some good stuff to share (like an old work haiku).
